Operation Training: Search and Rescue, UAVs team up

SALINA — A tornado had demolished a small town 10 miles southeast of Salina, Kan. Hundreds of people were missing; trapped in vehicles, buildings, and piles of rubble, thrown into trees and onto surrounding structures. Hazardous material was leaking from a building in the center of town.

The sounds of saws tearing through concrete and metal filled the air as search and rescue teams from around the state came together to begin the process of locating and saving their friends, neighbors, and total strangers – working as a team alongside a firefighter they had never met from a squad 200 miles from their own station.

A tornado had destroyed a town in this training scenario. More photos at http://on.fb.me/H0Kv4l.

Men protected by HazMat suits worked on the best strategy to determine the location and chemical makeup of the threat they had to neutralize. Another team conducted a wide-area search to look for victims that may have been carried into the nearby countryside, the weight of the mud caking their boots making each step of their 6-mile trek a little more difficult than the one before. The K-9 unit helped with the search, notifying their handlers when they caught a scent.

Meanwhile, an unmanned aircraft system soared overhead, providing valuable real-time data to incident commanders. Continue reading

Volunteers needed for Academic Excellence Challenge Team State Tournament

SALINA — The Academic Excellence Challenge Team State Tournament will bring teams of students from all 19 Kansas community colleges to K-State Salina, April 27-28. Running the tournament will require the assistance of more than 100 volunteers.

Each round requires six moderators and six scorekeepers and lasts approximately one hour. Friday’s five rounds run 2-6:30 pm. Saturday’s six semi-final rounds run 8:30 am to 2:30 pm with a break for lunch. The final play-offs will begin at 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Similar to Quiz Bowl at the high school level, students answer questions in subjects such as art, literature, science, math, history, geography, and current events. Teams participate in scrimmages and competitions with other community colleges around the state throughout the year.

K-State Salina student presents panel at regional anime convention

Houston Hubbard at Naka-Kon

SALINA — K-State Salina student Houston Hubbard presented “Zoology of Miyazaki” at Naka-Kon 2012, an annual Overland Park-based anime convention that drew more than 5,000 people from the Midwest. Hubbard, a junior in electronics and computer engineering technology program from Hutchinson, was joined by former students Tanner Wiegert and Sierra Hopson, both Salina residents and members of Otakats, the campus’ anime club.

More than 100 people attended the presentation about the creatures in the films of Hayao Miyazaki, one of Japan’s most popular animation directors. They covered the backgrounds – some rooted in folklore, others sprung from the author’s imagination – of animals in the films “Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and “Princess Mononoke.” Continue reading
